China Aims to Quadruple AI Computing Capacity by 2030
Beijing plans to reach a capacity of 9,800 exaflops by 2030 in order to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
China plans to significantly expand its intelligent computing capacity and build large-scale data clusters by increasing investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure over the next five years.
New Targets in Artificial Intelligence Investments
Remarkable targets were included in the five-year industry plan published on Monday by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
According to the announced strategy, the goal is to reach an intelligent computing capacity of 9,800 exaflops by 2030.
Infrastructure Investments and Funding
Within the framework of the prepared plan, a total of 3.8 trillion yuan in information infrastructure investments is projected between 2026 and 2030.
Emphasis on Clustering and Domestic Chips
In the new period, artificial intelligence computing clusters featuring tens of thousands of graphics processing cards are planned to be established in an orderly manner.
Additionally, it is requested that efforts be increased to make the infrastructure compatible with domestically produced computing chips.
Current Capacity and Growth Rates
As of the end of June, China's intelligent computing capacity had reached 2,185 exaflops, showing a 177 percent increase compared to the previous year.
According to National Data Administration figures, this capacity rose to approximately 2,450 exaflops by the end of July.
East Data and West Computing Project
The capacity increase in question relies on the project launched in 2022, which aims to shift energy-intensive workloads to the western regions.
New Generation Communication Networks and Technologies
Within the scope of the plan, launching commercial 6G services at an appropriate time and integrating 5G technology with satellite systems are also targeted.
