Computer control achieved via brain signals at Karabük University
A new project developed with TÜBİTAK support allows ALS patients and individuals unable to use their muscles to control computers and wheelchairs.
With a TÜBİTAK-supported project conducted at Karabük University, the control of computers and computer-based systems using brain signals has been successfully achieved. Standing out with its low-cost and portable structure, this system aims to make life easier, particularly for ALS patients and individuals who cannot use their muscles.
Start and Purpose of the Project
The project, led by Dr. Abdullah Bilal Aygün, a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Karabük University (KBÜ), began its work last year.
This innovative TÜBİTAK-supported study was brought to life within the scope of brain-computer interfaces.
SSVEP Method and Working Principle
The project focused on SSVEP signals, which are the automatic and rhythmic electrical responses of the brain to a visual stimulus flashing at a specific frequency.
By having the person focus on letters flashing at different frequencies on the screen, the signals generated in the posterior lobe of the brain are detected and converted into commands.
Conveniences Provided for Patients
Thanks to the developed technology, ALS patients and individuals who cannot use their striated muscles are able to manage computers as they wish.
The system enables users to operate a wheelchair, write text, and meet their basic demands without the need for an assistant.
Cost Advantage and Testing Process
Normally high-cost, this hardware was produced for only 50 dollars and in a portable format through the project.
Tested on ten volunteers, the system's data was analyzed and submitted to an academic journal within the Q1 scope.
