Disney appoints Character.AI CEO as its first chief technology officer

Disney has announced the appointment of Karandeep Anand, CEO of AI startup Character.AI, as its first chief technology officer. Effective October 2, Anand will serve as senior vice president and CTO, reporting directly to Chairman Josh D'Amaro.

Disney has announced the appointment of Karandeep Anand, CEO of the artificial intelligence startup Character.AI, as its first chief technology officer. Karandeep Anand will begin his new role on October 2.

Anand will serve as senior vice president and CTO within Disney and will report directly to CEO Josh D'Amaro.

Management and Areas of Responsibility

According to the official announcement, Karandeep Anand will oversee corporate technology, infrastructure, data management, artificial intelligence platforms, and product and engineering units.

Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro stated that Anand is a technical and product-focused strategist and an expert founder with strong instincts regarding what fans want.

Past Copyright and Legal Proceedings

This appointment comes a year after Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI over the unauthorized use of characters. The startup removed the relevant Disney characters following the notice.

Character.AI has also faced lawsuits regarding chatbot safety in the past, with a settlement reached with families in January.

OpenAI and Artificial Intelligence Moves

Disney has previously both resorted to legal action and pursued licensing agreements with artificial intelligence firms. The company had also sought to establish close collaborations with OpenAI.

An investment and licensing agreement announced last December would have allowed Disney characters to be used in OpenAI's Sora video application, but the deal ended in March.
