A scientific study conducted in the USA revealed that constantly taking photos or screenshots via smartphones weakens human memory and makes it harder to remember details.

Scope of the Research

A new study conducted at Binghamton University in the USA examined in detail the effects of continuously recording visuals with smartphones on human memory.

In the process involving a total of 892 participants and consisting of seven different experiments, it was determined that individuals who photographed memories or took screenshots had difficulty remembering details about those events.

Experiment Results

Within the scope of the experiments, participants were shown various works of art, and some were asked to simply look at the pictures while others were asked to take screenshots.

According to the results obtained, participants who only looked at the visuals remembered the pictures much more accurately and in greater detail compared to the participants who took screenshots.

Expert Evaluations

Psychologist Sophia Fabrizio, the lead author of the study, drew attention to the importance of the results obtained in her statement regarding the findings.

Fabrizio stated that there is a high probability of damaging memory regarding experiences and information by pressing a single button, and this weakening can go beyond the recorded visual.

Cognitive Offloading

Experts stated that this situation is called cognitive offloading in the scientific world and shared detailed information on the subject.

Accordingly, when the brain knows that a piece of information is stored via a photograph, it can reduce the effort it needs to spend to keep that information in its own memory.

Issue of Focusing on the Experience

Researchers state that directing attention entirely to the screen during the photo-taking process can directly prevent focusing on the experience happening at that moment.

It is clearly stated that trying to constantly take photos, especially during special moments, can lead to the experienced memories remaining much more blurred in human memory.
