Maryland Governor Wes Moore has unveiled a new human-centered strategy aimed at the responsible development and regulation of artificial intelligence in the state. Following this initiative, he enacted an executive order that restricts tax exemptions for large data centers with a capacity of 25 megawatts or more.
Human-Centered Principles for AI
The AI framework announced by Governor Moore is built upon three core principles: protecting people, centering worker rights, and ensuring the safety of children.
This strategy aims to regulate AI companies, prevent discrimination, collaborate with labor unions, and strengthen user protections against chatbot technologies.
New Standards for Data Centers
The signed executive order targets large data centers of 25 megawatts and above, aiming to limit tax exemptions for these facilities.
The new regulation will be evaluated based on five main criteria: grid protection, economic benefit, community engagement, environmental protection, and transparency.
Support from the Energy Sector
Energy companies such as BGE, Delmarva Power, and Pepco expressed their support for the decision, stating that large energy consumers should cover infrastructure costs.
The companies emphasized that this regulation is an important step to prevent the increasing energy demand from imposing additional costs on existing customers.
