The Miami University Senate discussed an artificial intelligence center proposal, changes to technology fees, and student union updates during its September 14 meeting.
New Era in Technology Fees
The university has decided to end the 18-year competitive technology fee process in order to prioritize direct student technology support. In this context, institutional updates were shared with participants by Provost Trent Gould.
Artificial Intelligence Center Proposal
Dennis Cheatham, associate professor of graphic and experience design, proposed the establishment of a Miami Center for Artificial Intelligence to support interdisciplinary education, research, faculty support, and industry partnerships.
Discussions on the Center
Senator Madelyn Detloff expressed concerns regarding funding conflicts of interest related to AI providers and environmental impacts. Other senators questioned the center's future viability in the face of rapidly changing technology.
Council and Bylaw Amendments
Jason Abbitt proposed a two-year term to restructure the cycle for upcoming graduate council elections. Meanwhile, Carol Fabby introduced a project aimed at modernizing the senate bylaws with a target date of March 1, 2027.
Student Union and Next Meeting
Student Body President Charlie Merrill provided information about the recent Mega Fair and an upcoming event encouraging students to disconnect from their phones. The next senate meeting is scheduled for September 28.
