China-based technology company Huawei announced that it has reached a multi-year, broad patent licensing agreement with Qualcomm covering artificial intelligence, 5G, computing, and networking technologies.

Details of the Comprehensive Patent Agreement

According to the official announcement, the new agreement covers critical areas including artificial intelligence, 5G, computer systems, and networking technologies.

This memorandum marks the first patent licensing agreement between Huawei and Qualcomm encompassing 5G technologies.

Patent Acquisition and Financial Dimension

Under the agreement, Qualcomm will acquire certain patents held by Huawei in the U.S. related to computer, artificial intelligence, and networking technologies.

Huawei stated that with the completion of this agreement, the total value of its patent licensing agreements is expected to exceed $6.9 billion.

R&D Investments and Revenues

The company stated that its intellectual property licensing business, reflecting years of intensive research and development investments, has been generating positive revenue since 2021.

Huawei had significantly increased its R&D spending in recent years as it struggled to source advanced chips and critical software due to U.S. trade restrictions in place since 2019.
