Wide Field View and Powerful Camera
Roman was designed to examine massive clusters of galaxies, stars, and planets by scanning very large areas of the sky. In a single glance, at least 100 times more sky can be seen compared to Hubble.
The 300-megapixel infrared camera at the heart of the telescope aims to capture massive images to create the largest catalog of astronomical objects to date.
Looking at the Universe Through a Spy Satellite Mirror
The telescope's 2.4-meter primary mirror was donated in 2012 by the National Reconnaissance Office, which is responsible for American spy satellites. The technology originally developed to look down at Earth was adapted for space research.
Thanks to this donation, NASA gained the opportunity to use a mirror much larger than originally planned, making it possible to see dimmer objects and provide a clearer view.
New Exoplanets and Sky Survey
It is projected that the telescope could discover more than 20 billion stars in our galaxy in just one month and reveal new exoplanets.
Through this, the number of currently known exoplanets, which is around 6,000, is aimed to be increased to over 100,000.

Astronomers will utilize the scans of the Roman spacecraft to solve dark matter and dark energy, two of the greatest mysteries of modern astronomy.
By scanning hundreds of millions of galaxies, the telescope will provide information about the fundamental nature of the universe and how galaxies have evolved since the Big Bang.

The new telescope takes its name from Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, who served in NASA's early years and played a critical role in making the Hubble Space Telescope a reality.
This naming also serves as a reference to the history of female scientists who played a significant part in shaping modern astronomy.
