The next-generation Interferometric Image Scanning Microscopy system developed by Stanford University has succeeded in imaging living cells at a resolution of approximately 120 nanometers without using fluorescent labels.

New Microscope Technology

Scientists at Stanford University have made significant progress in microscopy technology by developing a new system that enables a more detailed examination of intracellular events. Called Interferometric Image Scanning Microscopy, the technology achieves a resolution level of approximately 120 nanometers in living cells.

Advantage of Label-Free Imaging

In traditional methods, fluorescent substances used to visualize intracellular structures can lose their brightness over time and negatively affect cell behaviors. The newly developed iISM system, on the other hand, offers the opportunity to work without placing an additional marker into the cell.

Low Light Power and Reliability

Detecting the scattering of laser light from cell structures, this special system combines numerous images obtained from different angles. Using lower light power compared to similar methods reduces the risk of light damage to living cells.

Broad Research Areas

The Stanford team has begun using the new microscope to examine the cellular uptake of cancer drugs, plant and bacterium interactions, and the shape changes of red blood cells in response to malaria infection.
