President Erdoğan: Turkey Will Be a Strong Actor in the Space Race
Speaking at the 77th International Astronautical Congress held in Antalya, President Erdoğan highlighted Turkey's success in domestic production of space technologies and announced that a new spaceport will be built in Somalia.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized Turkey's determination in space exploration during his opening speech at the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya. Stating that the country is one of the few nations capable of designing and producing its own satellites, Erdoğan announced that construction work for a spaceport in Somalia has begun.
Progress in Domestic Satellite Technologies
Stating that Turkey has not fallen behind in the space race, Erdoğan touched upon the strategic importance of developing the İMECE, GÖKTÜRK, and TÜRKSAT series of satellites. In particular, the production of TÜRKSAT 6A, launched in 2024, through domestic and national means stood out as a significant step proving Turkey's technological competence in this field.
Spaceport Project in Somalia
Aiming to increase its access to space, Turkey has begun work on building a spaceport in Somalia. The project is expected to strengthen Turkey's position in the global space ecosystem and expand its independent access capabilities.
Lunar Research Program and Goals
It was stated that the 3.5-ton Lunar Spacecraft, developed under the Lunar Research Program, has reached a domestic production rate of over 80 percent. It was noted that the system-level environmental tests of the vehicle have been completed and that Turkey is focusing on larger goals in its space activities.
Cooperation in Space and the Role of Youth
Stating that they are against the weaponization of space, Erdoğan emphasized that the space race should not be under the monopoly of just a few countries. Furthermore, it was stated that the interest of the TEKNOFEST generation in science and technology is the most important force that will carry Turkey's space vision into the future.
