Proposed Temporary Ban on AI Glasses in Norway
The Norwegian government is preparing to introduce temporary restrictions on the use of AI glasses due to privacy risks and concerns over unauthorized recording.
The Norwegian administration plans to submit a temporary ban proposal to parliament against AI glasses capable of unauthorized video and audio recording in sensitive areas such as parks, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Scope and Rationale of the Ban
The Norwegian government has taken action regarding AI glasses that can take unauthorized photos, record conversations, or stream video in public spaces and locations where privacy is paramount.
Minister of Digitalization and Public Administration Torgeir Micaelsen emphasized that this technology carries serious concerns regarding its potential to record individuals without their knowledge.
Areas Planned for the Ban
The proposed temporary ban is projected to cover schools, daycare centers, playgrounds, youth clubs, as well as healthcare facilities and fitness centers.
Additionally, public concerts, sporting events, parks, beaches, museums, and shopping malls are being evaluated among the places where the measure could be applied.
Review Process and Exceptions
The requested temporary ban is intended to give authorities time to thoroughly examine the issue, clarify device types, and create a discussion environment for permanent regulations.
The government stated that a blanket ban is not being applied to wearable technologies, noting that exceptions are being evaluated for certain locations, specific uses, and sensitive groups.
