Saltfoss enlists Korean services for MSR development

Denmark-based floating molten salt reactor developer Saltfoss has signed a two-year technology services contract with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) for the development of its seaMSR-100 reactor. Valued at three billion South Korean won, the agreement covers fuel production and material testing.

Two-year technical services agreement

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute will provide fuel production and material corrosion evaluation services for Danish floating molten salt reactor developer Saltfoss' seaMSR-100 reactor over the next two years.

Scope of the agreement and technical details

Under the signed technology agreement, KAERI will provide support in critical areas such as the pretreatment of fluoride molten salt for fuel-grade use, nuclear fuel production, the establishment of a natural circulation test loop, and the evaluation of material corrosion.

Financial value and ownership rights

KAERI officials stated that the technology export contract with Saltfoss is worth approximately three billion South Korean won. The institute emphasized that ownership of the existing reactor source technologies is not being transferred, and that only R&D services are being provided.

Joint evaluations by executives

Saltfoss CEO Klaus Nyengaard stated that KAERI's deep experience in molten salt fuels and materials will greatly empower their team as they advance the seaMSR-100 reactor toward the certification process.

Strategic partnerships with South Korea

Formerly known as Seaborg, Saltfoss continues to strengthen its relations with South Korea, working on floating MSR platforms with key partners such as Samsung Heavy Industries.

Future vision and global goals

KAERI Acting President Im In-cheol noted that the validation of South Korea's original MSR technology—achieved through national R&D—by a foreign private company is a significant milestone, and stated that they will enhance competitiveness in the global market.
