Science and Technology Workshop for Growth in the Mekong Delta
An important consultation meeting was held in the city of Can Tho with the aim of increasing the region's economic potential and achieving double-digit growth.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Can Tho City People's Committee, and Can Tho University, a workshop on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation was held, targeting double-digit economic growth in the Mekong Delta.
Purpose of the Workshop
A comprehensive workshop was held on September 25, 2026, at Can Tho University in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Can Tho City People's Committee, and Can Tho University.
The event was organized as an important consultation activity in the process of formulating a special plan aimed at developing science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation in the region.
Participants and Experts
The workshop was attended by numerous representatives from central and local organizations, research institutes, universities, businesses, experts, and scientists.
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Trung Tinh, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Van Khoi, and former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan delivered speeches at the meeting.
Regional Advantages
Attention was drawn to the region's key strategic advantages such as agriculture, fisheries, marine economy, energy, and biological resources.
It features a structure that accounts for more than 50 percent of the country's rice production, approximately 65 percent of aquaculture production, and over 70 percent of fruit production.
Strategic Development Directions
Nguyen Van Khoi, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee, proposed three main development directions in line with the double-digit growth target.
The goals include developing high-tech agriculture, promoting digital transformation, establishing smart cities, and creating an innovation ecosystem.
Future-Oriented Recommendations
Former National Assembly Vice Chairman Le Minh Hoan stated that there is a need to transition from adapting to nature to understanding the market and mastering technology.
Suggestions were made such as creating a digital twin of the Delta, monitoring soil health, and transforming the one-million-hectare rice model.
Approval Process of the Plan
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Trung Tinh stated that the focus is on finalizing the special plan aimed at stimulating growth in the region.
It was expressed that this prepared special plan is expected to be submitted for approval no later than November 15.
