Hosted by the Turkish Space Agency in Antalya, the 33rd UN/IAF Workshop focused on the place of developing countries in the space economy and evaluated the social benefits of space technologies.

Location and Scope of the Workshop

Antalya hosted one of the major gatherings of the global space sector, discussing the position of developing countries in the space economy ahead of the 77th International Astronautical Congress.

Organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the International Astronautical Federation, the 33rd UN/IAF Workshop took place in Antalya on October 3-4, hosted by the Turkish Space Agency.

Impact of Space Investments on Citizens' Lives

The core of the workshop centered on how space technologies can contribute to economic and social resilience in developing countries.

Aydınlık columnist Uğur Güven, attending the meeting by special invitation, brought up the question of how space investments will find a counterpart in citizens' daily lives.

Earth-Focused Space Technologies

It was argued that while space investments in Turkey face criticisms regarding spending resources due to problems on Earth, the value of technology should be assessed through concrete areas of use.

It was emphasized that satellite and Earth observation technologies can be used in a wide range of areas from farmers' irrigation decisions to fishing, and from monitoring forests and natural resources to disaster management.

Recipient of the Final Report

The use of space-based solutions in agriculture, transportation, energy, telecommunications, disaster management, and environmental monitoring were among the main topics of the workshop.

The final report and recommendations of the workshop will be officially submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
