Britain's domestic intelligence agency, MI5, has issued an unprecedented warning stating that a China-linked organization is financing academic research in fields such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity on behalf of Beijing's state security.

Espionage Warning from MI5

Britain's domestic intelligence service, MI5, has issued its first-ever independent and public warning that a China-linked entity has been funding academic research.

Research Areas and Risks

It was reported that over a hundred British academics have contributed to projects by the China General Technology Research Institute, which has strong ties to the Chinese Ministry of State Security. The areas receiving contributions include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, covert communication systems, and steganography.

Legal Warning and Sanctions

MI5 announced that while the majority of academics acted in good faith and were unaware of these ties, those who continue these relationships could face investigation under the National Security Act 2023.

Ministerial and Chinese Response

Security Minister Dan Jarvis sent a letter to university leaders asking for these relationships to be terminated. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in London rejected the accusations, stating that the claims are entirely imaginary and defamatory.
