Members of the US House of Representatives sent an official letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, stating that the social media giant rolling back its mechanisms to combat disinformation poses a serious security vulnerability for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

Dated August 17, 2026, and led by Representative Kevin Mullin with the signatures of 19 members of Congress—including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—the letter requested comprehensive explanations regarding the company's election security policies and gave Meta management until September 18 to respond.
Termination of the Fact-Checking Program
The letter criticized Meta's decision in January 2025 to terminate its third-party fact-checking program—run with more than 90 independent verification organizations—across the United States. It was noted that while this practice continues globally, it was repealed in the US during an election process.
It was stated that the Community Notes system implemented instead of independent auditing falls short of stopping the circulation of misleading content, placing the burden of verification on users lacking sufficient expertise.
Criticism of Automation-Based Moderation
Citing internal company data, the letter claimed that up to 90 percent of privacy and safety risk assessments within Meta have been handed over to automation. Removing algorithm updates from human oversight and leaving them to artificial intelligence approval was presented as a factor undermining election security.
Artificial Intelligence and Synthetic Content Cases
Synthetic content produced with generative AI tools was illustrated through concrete cases directly interfering with elections. Alongside the example of the fake account Emily Hart in India, manipulation attempts during US Senate races and prior to Irish elections were cited as examples of the disinformation threat.
Demand for Clarification on Nine Headings
Stating that Meta management has fallen behind the crisis desks and oversight mechanisms it established during past election periods, members of Congress officially requested clarification from the company on nine main headings. Meta is expected to provide written responses to these questions by September 18, 2026, at the latest.
