US and German Scientists Win Nobel Medicine Prize for Work on Light and Brain

American scientist Karl Deisseroth and German researchers Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel were deemed worthy of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine thanks to their development of the optogenetics technique, which allows for controlling individual nerve cells in the brain using light.

Rationale for the Nobel Prize

In the announcement made by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute, it was announced that the prestigious award was presented due to groundbreaking discoveries in the fields of light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

Sharing of the Prize Amount

The three scientists, who have signed pioneering works in their fields, will share the grand cash prize of a total of 12 million Swedish kronor, which is approximately 1.2 million dollars, equally among themselves.

Importance of the Optogenetics Technique

The developed optogenetics technique allows for the detailed examination of highly complex diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, epilepsy, and addiction in animal models.

At the same time, this innovative method holds great hope for the development of potential new treatments targeting blindness and hearing impairments in the future.
