The avalanche disaster, which struck an area where a climbing group had set up camp in Nepal's Himalayas, occurred at the base camp of the Himlung Himal peak in the Manang region. A massive snow mass covered the camp area during the incident that took place in the morning hours.
Casualties and Missing Persons
Nepali citizens, consisting of climbers and support personnel, had gone to the area to prepare the camp and fix ropes before the arrival of foreign mountaineers. As a result of the efforts conducted so far, the bodies of a total of four people have been found.
Impact of Adverse Weather Conditions
Heavy snowfall had been effective in recent days around the 7,126-meter-high peak near the Tibet border. Adverse weather conditions initially prevented helicopters and rescue teams from reaching the area.
Search and Rescue Operations
A rescue team consisting of experienced mountaineers was dispatched to the area by the Nepal National Mountain Guides Association. While teams continue their ascent with the hope of finding survivors, search activities for the missing people remaining at the camp, which is covered by about 14 feet of snow, are ongoing.
