BRICS summit: What are the key takeaways?

Leaders of the BRICS group unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration on the first day of the summit held in India's capital New Delhi, despite disagreements over the crises in the Middle East and Ukraine.

New Delhi Declaration and Adoption Process

Leaders of the 11-member bloc gathered on the first day of the two-day summit held in India's capital New Delhi. Despite differing approaches to various regional and global crises, a consensus was reached on a common text.

The New Delhi Declaration, adopted unanimously on the opening day of the summit, called for a multipolar world while containing expressions criticizing unilateral trade tariffs.

Middle East and Ukraine Developments

The declaration called for restraint against conflicts in the Middle East. The text avoided directly condemning US and Israeli attacks on Iran or Iran targeting Gulf countries.

Leaders sought to balance divisions on sensitive issues such as the wars in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war through negotiations.

Global Trade and the Global South

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that BRICS has reached a coming-of-age moment and called on the Global South to be rule-makers rather than accepting rules set elsewhere.

Although the declaration did not directly target the United States, it included emphases criticizing global trade wars. The summit also delivered a message of support for a Palestinian state.

Expanding Structure of BRICS

Founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the bloc expanded over time to increase its number of members.

South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia later joined the group, which currently consists of 11 members.
