Thai police have arrested a senior Buddhist monk and a woman accused of helping him on suspicion of embezzling funds collected for the monastery.
The incident has been recorded as the latest scandal involving clergy in the Buddhist-majority country, increasing calls for the auditing of temple finances.
Abbot of Historic Temple Targeted
Phra Wachirayan Wi, the 66-year-old abbot of the 14th-century Wat Phutthaisawan temple in the former capital Ayutthaya, was detained.
While the abbot faces charges of embezzlement and money laundering, a 47-year-old woman alleged to have helped conceal the money was also captured.
Start of Investigation and Seized Assets
In the investigation launched upon a tip-off in mid-July, it was determined that funds linked to donation receipts did not enter the temple account.
As part of the operation, authorities seized assets worth approximately 215 million baht, including 16 kilograms of gold bullion, jewelry, watches, and title deeds.
