Stating that the belief in nature's self-regenerating power is an illusion, the patriarch urged that ecological responsibility be addressed as an absolute necessity from the individual level to the global level.

Consumption and the Danger of Geocide

Stating that current human behavioral patterns correspond to the biblical figure of the foolish rich man, Bartholomew criticized consumer madness, the exploitation of nature, and the concept of geocide. He called for a radical shift in the understanding of progress, which he described as a Copernican Turn.
