Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington on Wednesday, where he was greeted at the aircraft stairs in a rare welcome by U.S. President Donald Trump. A 30-meter red carpet was rolled out at the base of the stairs placed at the door of Xi's aircraft.
Extension of the Trade Truce
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced in a television interview that the trade truce between the two countries, which involves reducing tariffs and avoiding new restrictions, has been extended until January. This extension gives leaders more time to discuss issues at international summits in November and December.
Diplomatic Engagements and Agenda
While much of the three-day visit focuses on diplomacy and pageantry, trade, artificial intelligence, and Taiwan remain key points of contention between the two superpowers. While the welcome drew criticism from some Republican politicians, Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the high-level contacts.
