Church Leaders in South Africa Share Message of Unity and Hope
Religious leaders in South Africa discussed church unity, spiritual education, and the shared leadership of the clergy and lay members during a visit by an LWF delegation.
Visiting South Africa, an LWF delegation met with local church heads and bishops to discuss hope, unity, and intra-church leadership dynamics in the face of challenges.
Balance of Lay and Spiritual Leadership
Lizwi Mtumtum, President of the Moravian Church in South Africa, stated that lay and spiritual leadership go hand in hand equally within the church. Emphasizing that he is also a lay leader, Mtumtum highlighted that this approach contributes to the church's growth and acquiring new methods.
Historical Process and Social Role
Bishop Gilbert Filter of the Cape Church recalled the processes of change during the periods of colonialism and apartheid, touching upon the importance of working for local communities. Filter underlined that we must be the church not just for our own community, but for the entirety of our community.
Status of Theological Educational Institutions
Within the scope of the visit, the LWF delegation inspected various educational institutions such as the Moravian Theological Centre, Stellenbosch University Faculty of Theology, and the ELCSA Lutheran Theological Seminary. It was noted that theological educational institutions in the region are struggling with sustainability and financial challenges.
