The United Arab Emirates Public Prosecution announced that a co-pilot attempted a terrorist attack using a cockpit axe on a Flydubai flight en route to Israel.
Dangerous Moments During the Flight
In a statement issued by the United Arab Emirates Public Prosecution, it was reported that a major danger was averted on Flydubai flight FZ1073.
It was noted that while the aircraft was heading towards Israel, the co-pilot launched an attack using the emergency axe located in the cockpit.
The Aircraft Rapidly Losing Altitude
Carrying 182 passengers, the aircraft experienced a sudden drop of 16,625 feet in just over thirty seconds due to the scuffle and loss of control.
It was reported that thanks to the timely intervention of passengers and crew, a potential major disaster was narrowly avoided.
Details of the Attack and Intervention
UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi stated that a crash axe kept in the cockpit for emergencies was used in the attack.
According to information in media outlets, the co-pilot who carried out the attack was identified as Hammam al-Hammami, an Omani national.
Injury of the Captain Pilot and Safe Landing
Indian national captain pilot Smit Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door despite suffering numerous stab wounds.
With the opening of the door, passengers and crew subdued the co-pilot, and the aircraft was safely landed at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia by two backup pilots.
