Citizens went to the polls across Germany for local elections in the states of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These critical elections brought damaging defeats for the Christian Democratic Union party led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Exit Polls and Results

According to exit polls released by public broadcasters ZDF and ARD, the AfD took the lead in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 38 percent of the vote. It was followed by the SPD with 36 percent, while the CDU remained on the verge of the 5 percent threshold, recording its worst result in the state.

In Berlin, the ruling coalition partner CDU achieved 20 percent of the vote, while Die Linke, led by Elif Eralp, came in first place with approximately 26 percent.

Friedrich Merz's Decision to Stay in Office

Despite low public approval ratings and increasing political pressure, Friedrich Merz emphasized during a statement at party headquarters that he would remain in office. Describing the results as a disaster, Merz stated that he would continue with the reform packages to be implemented in the autumn period.
