Death of Laboratory Worker in Siberia and Plague Allegations Closely Monitored
The incident at a research institute in Siberia and local quarantine measures are being closely monitored internationally.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that they are closely monitoring the case of the 28-year-old Russian laboratory worker who died in Siberia with suspected plague.
Development of the Incident and Mortality Process
Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee at an anti-plague institute in the city of Irkutsk, fell ill at work and was hospitalized, passing away on October 2 at a hospital in the Shelekhov region.
Official Statements and Conflicting Allegations
Russia's health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor stated that the employee died of pneumonia of unknown exact cause and that tests did not reveal any microorganisms connected to her profession. Meanwhile, Russian media featured unverified claims suggesting she may have contracted an infection as a result of an accident in the laboratory.
Quarantine and Regional Measures
According to local media reports, the institute was placed under quarantine with more than sixty people isolated, and restrictions were implemented in various hospitals across the city. While conflicting messages came from regional authorities, precautionary measures such as mandatory face masks and screening forms mentioning the plague were put into effect.
International Monitoring and Situation Assessment
US and international experts noted that the plague remains endemic in parts of Siberia though human cases are rare, and stated that they are closely monitoring the process.
