Eye floaters and flashes of light may carry the risk of retinal tear
Experts warned that sudden floaters and flashes of light appearing in the eyes can lead to retinal tears and permanent vision loss.
Head of the Ophthalmology Department Prof. Dr. Hande Çeliker stated in her remarks on World Sight Day that sudden complaints of floaters and flashes of light in the eye may be precursors to retinal tears, which can lead to permanent vision loss.
Causes of Eye Floaters
Black spots, thin lines, and spider web-like floaters moving in front of the eyes are mostly caused by age-related changes in the vitreous fluid inside the eye. While this condition does not always indicate a serious problem, sudden increases serve as a warning.
Symptoms of Retinal Tear
If floaters are accompanied by flashes of light, dark areas in the visual field, or a sensation of a curtain falling, it may be a harbinger of emergency situations such as retinal tear and detachment. Tears that are not noticed in time cause vision loss.
Risk Factors and Emergency Examination
While individuals with high myopia, those who have suffered eye trauma, and those who have undergone surgery carry a higher risk, sudden floaters can also be seen in people who have had no prior issues. In the presence of these symptoms, an emergency eye examination on the same day is essential.
