Ferry Capsizes Off Northern Cyprus: 7 Lives Lost
Following the capsizing of a catamaran-type ferry carrying approximately 270 people off the coast of Northern Cyprus, search and rescue operations have successfully rescued 237 people.
At least 7 people lost their lives and numerous others were rescued after a catamaran-type ferry carrying roughly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus due to adverse weather conditions.
Ferry Began Taking on Water During Voyage
The catamaran-type ferry, belonging to Filo Denizcilik, had set off from the port of Kyrenia in northern Cyprus, heading toward the port of Taşucu in Turkey's Mersin province.
Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel reported that only 15 minutes after its departure, the ferry encountered adverse weather conditions and began taking on water.
Search and Rescue Operations Continue
It was reported that a distress call was made shortly after the vessel began taking on water approximately 7.5 kilometers off the coast, and teams were dispatched to the scene.
As part of the ongoing search and rescue operations, it was announced that 237 people have been rescued alive so far, while efforts to find the 24 missing individuals are still underway.
