Fire in California's Big Sur Region Grows Over Night

The Plaskett Fire, which began on Tuesday in California's Big Sur coastal region, more than doubled in size overnight due to strong winds, forcing mandatory evacuations.

Spread of the Fire and Evacuations

The Plaskett Fire, which broke out on Tuesday in Monterey County, remained out of control and affected an area of over 5,900 acres.

As a result of the rapid spread of the flames, authorities were forced to issue evacuation orders for local residents and stepped up security measures in the area.

Firefighting Efforts and Geographical Challenges

Fire officials deployed helicopters and air tankers for targeted water-drop operations to contain the flames.

However, the region's rugged terrain and limited road network made it extremely difficult for ground crews to access the fire zone.

Timber Fire and Regional Impacts

Meanwhile, the Timber Fire burning further north has scorched more than 24,000 acres, with authorities able to contain only 21 percent of it.

Both wildfires have caused the partial closure of Highway 1, a scenic route between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
