Passed Away Under United Nations Custody
Former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić died on Thursday under United Nations custody. While his lawyer Dragan Ivetić did not disclose the cause of death, Mladić had spent his final months in the hospital ward of the detention center in the suburbs of The Hague.
Srebrenica Massacre and War Crimes
Mladić was convicted as the mastermind of the genocide in Srebrenica in 1995, where at least 8,000 Muslims were massacred. This event was recorded as the largest crime against humanity in Europe since World War II.
Siege of Sarajevo and Trial Proceedings
Mladić, who caused the deaths of 10,000 people during the war by besieging Sarajevo with artillery fire and heavy machine guns, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017. His appeals against the sentence and requests for release were rejected in 2021.
