Background of the G20 Invitation

Past Summits and Contacts
Trump and Putin last met face-to-face in August 2025 in Anchorage, Alaska, but no agreement was reached regarding Ukraine. Putin has not visited the US mainland since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Kremlin's Assessment
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that no decision has been made yet regarding participation in the December summit. It was reported that Russia appreciates the invitation and the matter will be examined.
International Reactions
It was stated that if Putin accepts the invitation, it would be his first face-to-face participation in a G20 summit since 2019. On the other hand, this invitation drew criticism and concern from international allies, including EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
