Hundreds of Tourists Missing in Flash Flood on Nepal-Tibet Border

At least 157 bodies have been recovered following a landslide and flash flood near the Bhote Koshi River on the Nepal-Tibet border. It has been reported that more than 400 foreign tourists are missing in the region, including 33 British citizens.

Scale of the Disaster and Casualties

In a statement issued by the Nepal Tourism Board, it was stated that a flash flood occurred on the Tibet side of the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday at around 08.30 local time. Following the disaster, more than 400 travelers, at least 341 of whom are foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for.

Earthquake and Avalanche Claims

Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal stated in an address to parliament that initial reports indicate an earthquake triggered an avalanche, which subsequently led to the flash flood. Massive destruction occurred on the Nepal side as mud and rock masses collapsed into the river.

Houses, roads, and energy infrastructure in Nepal suffered severe damage due to the floodwaters. Tibetan authorities expressed concern that the death toll could rise following a landslide in the Gyirong region.

Rescue Operations and Warnings

Nepalese police announced that the bodies of 157 people have been recovered so far, while more than 40injured individuals are receiving treatment in hospitals. The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that eight of its citizens working at a hydroelectric power plant are missing and 10 citizens are stranded.

Authorities urged tourists in the Rasuwa region and around the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers to stay in safe areas and move to higher ground. Those planning to travel to the region have been asked to postpone their journeys.
