The 41-year-old former Italian warship, which holds the distinction of being Indonesia's first aircraft carrier, was welcomed with a military ceremony at the Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta.
Defense Cooperation with Italy
Italy had agreed in March to transfer the vessel, which was decommissioned in 2024, to Indonesia. This step aims to strengthen defense relations between the two countries.
To Be Named KRI Gajah Mada
The ship will join the Indonesian Navy with an official ceremony next week and will be named KRI Gajah Mada. Thus, Indonesia will become the second country in the region to own an aircraft carrier after Thailand.
Cost and Financing Debates
Despite financial pressures, the Ministry of Finance approved $450 million in funding in 2025. However, lawmakers warn that modernization costs could reach $900 million.
Disaster and Mobile Command Center
The Indonesian administration plans to position this ship as a support base and a mobile command center for helicopters, drones, and disaster management.
