Satellite analyses published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies show that construction activity at the underground fortress near the Natanz nuclear facility has surged rapidly this year.
Increase in Satellite Analyses
Six years of satellite analyses revealed that construction activity at the mountain fortress peaked this year, showing Iran's efforts to transform this facility into a secure sanctuary for its nuclear program.
Researchers determined that tunnel entrances have been reinforced, the internal road network has been paved, and excavation debris has been cleared to solidify the site.
Depth and Location of the Facility
Located at least 300 feet (approximately 90 meters) deep within Mount Kolang, this underground structure stands out as a critical center aiming to protect Iran's nuclear activities from external interventions.
The extreme underground depth of the center is protected to a level that could place it beyond the reach of even the largest bunker-buster bombs available to the US.
Intelligence Warnings and Timing
It was determined that construction activities accelerated after Israeli intelligence warned the US administration that uranium centrifuges and components were being moved to this underground base.
Following the clashes in June of last year, the Tehran administration continued to take steps to rapidly reinforce the facility.
US Threats and Technical Challenges
While President Donald Trump reiterated potential military strike threats against the facility, the immense underground depth of the site makes the destruction process quite challenging.
America's most powerful bunker-buster bomb, the GBU-57, can only penetrate up to 200 feet underground, which falls short of the deepest points of Mount Pickaxe.
