Iraq takes action following drone attacks on Saudi Arabian oil pipeline
Drone attacks launched from Iraqi territory by Iran-backed militias against a Saudi Arabian pipeline have caused tension between the two countries.
The Iraqi government has begun taking diplomatic and administrative steps after local Iran-backed militia forces were held responsible for drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia's main oil pipeline.
The Attack and Saudi Arabia's Decision
Saudi Arabia suspended the flow of oil through its critical East-West pipeline as a precautionary measure following a drone attack.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the attacks were carried out using drones launched from Iraqi territory and announced that it would not retaliate to allow the Baghdad administration the opportunity to take necessary steps.
Iraq's Investigation and Dismissal Steps
Iraqi authorities determined that the attacks targeting Saudi Arabia were launched from the Maysan province near the Iranian border.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered a comprehensive investigation into the regional operations command and dismissed the commanding officer in question.
Closure of Gates at the Iranian Border
In connection with the investigation, the Iraqi administration temporarily closed the Shalamcheh and Chazabeh border crossings with Iran.
Iranian officials confirmed that, in line with this decision, all passenger and commercial transit at both gates has been suspended until further notice.
Regional Security and Militia Pressure
The incident increased the pressure on the country ahead of the Iraqi administration's late September target for disarming non-state armed groups.
