More than two months after a ceasefire went into effect between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, fighting continues on the strategic Ali Taher hill in southern Lebanon, and Israel has announced it has captured the area.
Continuing Clashes on the Strategic Hill
While the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah halted fighting across most of Lebanon, the struggle continued unabated at the strategic hill overlooking a major southern city.
In recent weeks, the Ali Taher hill has been the scene of daily Israeli artillery shelling and airstrikes, while Hezbollah has repeatedly attacked Israeli forces in the area with drones.
Diplomatic Initiatives and Tunnel Network
The United States, mediating between Lebanon and Israel, had asked Hezbollah to hand over the hill to the Lebanese army as part of a plan to disarm the militia, but Hezbollah rejected the proposal.
On Thursday night, the Israeli military announced it had taken operational control of Ali Taher and the network of tunnels used by Hezbollah beneath it.
Claims and the Situation in the Region
Following the Israeli military's statement, Hezbollah lawmaker Ihab Hamadeh questioned the claim, while observers and photojournalists at the scene stated they saw no trace of Israeli military presence in the area.
Overlooking the main roads leading to the city of Nabatiyeh and numerous villages, this strategic location continues to be a focal point of tension between the parties.
