The Israeli military has shared an investigation report claiming that 170 individuals killed in the Gaza conflict and identified as journalists were members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. This statement serves as a response to international criticisms that Israel deliberately targets members of the press.

Israel's Claims and Presentation of Evidence

Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated that the military was being criticized without facts being verified, publishing a website containing a list of the individuals claimed to be militants along with some visual evidence. While social media posts and photos were presented for some cases, unshared intelligence data was referenced for others.

CPJ's Approach and Review Process

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) stated that its own records include 190 journalist deaths and that 78 names overlap with Israel's list. CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg stated that they would independently evaluate the reliability of the evidence presented by Israel using their own methods.

International Reactions and the Journalism Environment

While the United Nations and various media organizations accuse Israel of deliberately targeting journalists, the Israeli administration largely restricts the entry of outside investigators into the region. The CPJ recalled that in previous reviews, it had removed 27 individuals from its list upon determining they were combatants.
