An Italian court has approved a gradual process for the reunification of three children with their families after they were taken by the state from a rural living space in Italy, while the parents expressed deep sorrow over the ordeal.

Australian Catherine Birmingham and her British partner Nathan Trevallion were living an alternative lifestyle in a wooded area in Italy's Abruzzo region. The couple's three children had been placed under protective custody by a juvenile court decision citing a lack of hygiene, social interaction, toilet facilities, and schooling.
Beginning of the Gradual Reunification Process
The Italian court approved a process that will allow the children to gradually reunite with their families. Lawyer Simone Pillon stated that this decision enables the children to return home for daytime visits and, starting in October, to spend the night with their families on weekends.
