Passed Away in Tokyo
Yayoi Kusama, one of the pioneers of Japanese avant-garde art, passed away at a hospital in Tokyo at the age of 97. In a statement released by the Yayoi Kusama Studio, although the cause of death was not specified, it was reported that the artist bid farewell to life on August 14.
The studio's statement emphasized that Kusama continued to paint until her final days and never stopped pursuing endless love and the search for the soul.
Known for Her Polka Dot Motif
Kusama gained worldwide fame for her signature polka dot and net motifs used in her paintings, sculptures, and museum installations. The polka dots, which she stated reflected the hallucinations she experienced since childhood, formed the foundation of the artist's works.
In an interview she gave in 2012, the artist stated that polka dots were wonderful and that she would continue to paint until she died.
New York Years and Hardships
Born to a middle-class family and defying her family's objections to her receiving art education, Kusama moved to America in 1957. She struggled with poverty and obscurity in New York for years.
Despite this, the artist, who did not give up on her unique style, managed to draw attention with her anti-war performances and innovative works, forming friendships with figures such as Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe.
Global Artistic Legacy
Kusama's works have been exhibited all over the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Ludwig Museum in Germany. She collaborated with major brands such as Louis Vuitton.
Awarded the Order of Culture in 2016, Japan's most prestigious award given to artists, Kusama had stated that she fought for her art until her last breath.
