Markets Post Decline After Record Levels on Wall Street
U.S. stock markets experienced declines due to volatility in bond yields and fluctuations in oil prices.
U.S. stock markets declined following a day of reaching record levels, driven by fluctuations in bond yields and ongoing uncertainties stemming from the war with Iran.
Declines in U.S. Stock Markets
U.S. stock markets closed lower on Wednesday following record levels. The S&P 500 index declined by 0.2 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 341 points. The Nasdaq composite index also pulled back by 0.2 percent from its record level.
Volatility in the Bond Market
Fluctuations in the bond market created downward pressure on stock prices. In the morning hours, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbed as high as 5.36 percent before dropping back to 5.28 percent later in the day following an auction conducted by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Fluctuations in Oil Prices
Uncertainties regarding when the war with Iran will allow the industry to return to normalization continue to impact oil prices. After rising above $102 a barrel in morning trading, Brent crude fluctuated and traded at $100.20.
Global Debt Concerns
International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized in a speech in Singapore that governments' record-high debt levels are one of the key factors determining the direction of the global economy. In France, growing debt and budget concerns negatively affected the CAC 40 index.
