Following declines in Wall Street markets, global stocks followed a mixed course. Brent crude oil prices retreated to around $104, while tensions between the US and Iran remained in focus for investors.
Rise in European Stock Exchanges
Following official data released in Britain showing that the economy grew faster than expected in July, the FTSE 100 index rose 0.5% to 10,656.44 points.
In Germany, the DAX index gained 0.6% to reach the 25,514.37 level, while France's CAC 40 index also gained 0.6% in value, reaching 8,161.31 points.
Declines in Asian Markets
Asian stock markets generally retreated by tracking losses on Wall Street, with Japan's Nikkei 225 index falling 1.9% to 64,011.34 points.
Shares of OpenAI investor SoftBank Group lost nearly 4% in value, while South Korea's Kospi index dropped 1.8% to 6,909.91 points.
Fall in Oil Prices
International benchmark Brent crude, which recorded gains during the day as a result of escalating tensions between the US and Iran, subsequently turned downward and lost 3.3% in value.
The barrel price of Brent crude retreated to $104.09, while benchmark US crude decreased by 2.8% to fall below $100, trading at $99.63.
Status of US Markets
Wall Street's primary benchmark, the S&P 500 index, recorded a decline for the fourth consecutive trading session, losing 0.6% in value.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index fell by 0.6%, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite index recorded a decline of 0.7%.
