Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah emphasized that the devastating glacial flood that claimed the lives of at least 1,400 people in his country is a consequence of the global climate crisis.
Global Warning and Responsibility
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated that the recent deadly flood disaster in his country serves as a reminder to the warming world of the heavy tolls of the climate crisis.
Stating that the disaster in August was not merely a local tragedy, Shah voiced that it carries a clear warning for the entire world.
Glacier Collapse and Loss of Life
International scientists linked the permafrost thaw caused by climate change to the instability of the glacier, which partially collapsed to cause a massive flood.
It was reported that at least 1,400 people lost their lives in the major flood disaster, and numerous individuals remain missing.
Economic Losses and Global Injustice
Prime Minister Shah emphasized that Nepal contributes less than a tenth of the heat-trapping gases responsible for climate change.
Despite this, it was stated that the country faces massive losses exceeding 5 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 15 percent of its gross domestic product.
