Following disasters that claimed the lives of hundreds in Nepal and Tibet, authorities have issued a new flood warning as water levels in the Bhotekoshi River rise.
New Flood and Inundation Warnings
Authorities issued a new flood warning on Sunday due to rising water levels in the Bhotekoshi River and urged residents to remain on high alert. Warning messages were sent to mobile phones in the early hours.
Casualty and Missing Persons Information
The Nepal disaster agency announced that the death toll from Wednesday's disasters has risen to 788, with 2,502 people missing. Chinese authorities reported that 16 people lost their lives and 546 are missing on their side of the border.
Foreign National Missing Persons
Among the missing are hundreds of people from over a dozen countries who were working in the area, visiting the mountains, or on a pilgrimage to a sacred peak. Chinese state media announced that 261 foreigners are missing in Tibet.
Transportation and Supply Route Works
As rescue teams work to clear the main highway connecting Kathmandu to one of the hardest-hit areas, Chinese authorities informed the Nepali side that water flow upstream of the river has increased.
Cause of the Disaster and International Support
Wednesday's flash floods began with the collapse of bedrock beneath a high glacier in the Himalayan region. Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that they will dispatch a search and rescue team and provide $1 million in financial aid.
