Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh organization, is scheduled to speak at an event in Manhattan on Saturday.

The Mayor's Limits of Authority and Views

When asked whether the event should be canceled, Mamdani stated that he is not a supporter of the rally, but does not know whether the city has any authority to cancel a private event.

Emphasizing that the vision of India he learned from his family is a pluralistic and secular republic, Mamdani expressed that it is disturbing to see the rise of an exclusionary movement.

Purpose of the Organization and Reactions

The event's website describes the August 29 gathering as a Universal Unity Celebration bringing together the Hindu American community.

While organizers state that the event promotes shared heritage and interfaith unity, many local organizations criticize Bhagwat's participation and the past of the RSS.

RSS and Human Rights Debates

The RSS, which is the origin of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP party, states that it organizes international visits to change external perceptions.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and human rights groups argue that the group has played a role in acts of violence targeting minorities, while the RSS denies these accusations.
