The number of people aged 100 and over in Japan has reached a record level, highlighting the demographic crisis in the country.
The centenarian population in Japan has broken a record to reach 107,677, deepening the aging society crisis facing the country.
Increase in the Number of Centenarians
According to data from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of people aged 100 and over reached 107,677 this year.
An increase of 7,914 people was recorded compared to last year, representing the 54th consecutive year of annual increases.
Demographic Distribution and Female Population
According to the official data released, women account for a large majority, approximately 88 percent, of the total population aged over 100.
Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno stated that long and healthy lives are made possible by medical technology and healthy lifestyles.
Deepening Demographic Crisis and Low Birth Rates
Japan is one of the countries with the oldest population in the world, where nearly one in every three residents is aged 65 and over.
The country's total fertility rate dropped to a record low of 1.14 in 2025.
