Nuward Aims for Ten SMRs Across Five European Countries
Nuward, an EDF subsidiary, has announced plans to build ten small modular reactors in five European countries and aims to reach the commercial phase before 2029.
Nuward, a subsidiary of the EDF Group, announced a new era following the completion of the design phase during its statement at the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna.
Europe-Wide Next-Generation Reactor Plan
Nuward Chief Executive Officer Julien Garrel stated that the company aims to build a fleet consisting of ten small modular reactors in five different European countries in the first phase.
The commercialization of the project is planned to be completed before 2029, with construction work scheduled to begin in 2030.
Schedule and Cooperation Talks
While the first power generation is targeted for 2035, the construction period for the reactors is projected to last forty-eight months.
Discussions have been held with countries such as Italy, Poland, Belgium, and Finland to establish a common European SMR vision.
Technical Specifications and Environmental Contribution
The Nuward SMR project will provide 400 megawatts of power and offer cogeneration options to support industrial clusters and district heating.
The system, which is planned to replace high-emission fossil fuel power plants, relies on proven technological building blocks.
