A passenger ferry traveling from Northern Cyprus to Turkey with about 270 people on board has capsized off the coast. Following the accident, numerous people were rescued, and official authorities reported that there were fatalities.
Ferry Voyage and Moment of Accident
The catamaran-type ferry had departed from the port of Kyrenia, heading towards the port of Taşucu in Mersin. Carrying approximately 259 passengers and eight crew members, the vessel began taking on water about 7.5 kilometers off the coast.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
In operations launched following the accident off Diana Beach, numerous passengers were pulled from the water. Some of the surviving victims were transferred to hospitals for medical treatment.
Official Statements and Information
Ali Murat Başçeri, Turkey's Ambassador to Nicosia, stated that there were fatalities in the incident. Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul noted that the ship belonged to the Filo Denizcilik company.
