Pilot Attack Averted at the Last Moment on Tel Aviv Flight
Passengers and crew thwarted an attack by the co-pilot on a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv; the restrained suspect was handed over to the police.
A flydubai flight FZ 1073 bound for Tel Aviv narrowly avoided disaster when the co-pilot attacked the captain. Passengers and off-duty pilots on board controlled the situation, preventing a potential catastrophe.
Attack in the Cockpit
On the flydubai flight heading to Tel Aviv, Indian captain Smit Machchhar was attacked by Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami. The captain, who was attacked with an axe, managed to open the cockpit door and warn the crew, averting a disaster.
Intervention by Passengers
Following the attack attempt, passengers and two off-duty pilots on the flight immediately intervened. Regaining control in a short time, the passengers neutralized the co-pilot and tied his hands.
Police Insistence and Dispute
Cabin crew members asking for the restrained co-pilot to be released sparked a backlash from the passengers. The passengers opposed the warnings, stating that the suspect would only be handed over to local police.
Safe Landing and Heroism
Following the incident, the cabin crew was directed to the middle section while the suspect was kept under security. Seriously injured Captain Smit Machchhar, along with the passengers and other pilots, ensured the safe landing of the aircraft.
