Within the scope of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dietitian Hümeyra Mutlu drew attention to the relationship between dietary habits and cancer, emphasizing that no single food can be protective, and outlined seven fundamental nutrition rules that can reduce the risk.

Consumption of Broccoli and Cabbage

Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts contain plant compounds called glucosinolates. Sulforaphane, formed from these compounds, is the subject of research due to its potential effects on cellular defense mechanisms.

Get Antioxidants from Foods

Fruits such as pomegranates, dark grapes, blueberries, and blackberries are rich in plant compounds that exhibit strong antioxidant properties. Experts state that these compounds can support mechanisms that protect cells against oxidative damage.

Gut Health and Fiber

It is known that gut bacteria can play a role in the processing of the hormone estrogen in the body. A daily intake of approximately 25 to 30 grams of fiber should be targeted, and dried legumes should be consumed at least 2-3 times a week.

Soy Consumption and Research

Soy has long been associated with breast cancer due to the isoflavones it contains. It is stated in scientific studies that plant estrogens do not exert the same effect as human estrogen, and balanced consumption is important.

Postmenopausal Adiposity

Beyond energy storage, adipose tissue also plays a role in hormone metabolism. Estrogen production occurring in adipose tissue after menopause is of great importance regarding the risk of hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

Herbal Extracts and Supplements

Foods such as green tea, turmeric, garlic, and onion are being examined in research. However, high-dose antioxidant or herbal extract supplements should not be used without physician approval, especially during the treatment process.

Mediterranean Diet Model

The most important factor in preventing breast cancer is not a single nutrient, but the entirety of one's diet. The Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and olive oil, helps maintain a healthy body weight.
