Quietly Shelved Plan to Prepare England's Countryside for Wildfires
Plans to prepare England for wildfires have reportedly been scrapped, despite knowledge that fire crews lack adequate protective equipment.
Official plans aimed at preparing England's rural areas for wildfires have been quietly cancelled, it has emerged. This development coincides with new data showing that fire crews lack the appropriate protective gear to tackle these blazes.
Cancellation of Wildfire Preparation Plan
Plans aimed at preparing the English countryside for wildfires were understood to have been quietly shelved by the government. This situation came to light alongside data revealing that fire services are deprived of the necessary proper protective equipment to deal with such hazards.
In the third national climate adaptation program published in July 2023, the Conservative government led by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had announced that a wildfire risk program would be run in England between 2023 and 2027 to adapt lands against wildfire risks.
The Program Never Being Implemented
It became clear through reviews and acquired information that the program in question was never brought to life. A statement by the current government indicated that this commitment was made during the previous administration but was never put into effect.
Environmental campaigner and author Guy Shrubsole reached this information through a freedom of information request. These obtained documents revealed that the planned measures never advanced to the implementation stage.
Fire Services' Lack of Equipment
New data obtained by the Country Land and Business Association clearly showed that more than half of the 29 responding fire services do not possess personal protective equipment designated for wildfires.
Record-level wildfires experienced during the summer months, when extreme heat and dry weather conditions turn rural areas into a major danger zone, had laid bare the scale of the threat posed by the climate crisis.
Union's Call and Expectations
Following these developments, the Fire Brigades Union urged that proper personal protective equipment and comprehensive training programs be urgently provided to all members battling wildfires.
Experts and union officials point out that taking urgent and concrete steps is imperative during this period when the climate crisis is intensifying its effects.
